Loopy Ladies Guild generally meets on the third Sunday of the month from 10:30 a.m. CT until 3:30 p.m. CT in a very accommodating space in Grayslake, IL. There is plenty of convenient parking at the door. Members do not need to attend the entire meeting each month, but the expanded hours give us plenty of time for hooking and talking. In winter and inclement weather, we meet via Zoom.
At each meeting, we typically have a demonstration of a rug hooking tip or technique, and discuss what we are each working on. Several times a year, we celebrate a holiday or special event with refreshments at our meetings.
Marilyn Denning, a former Loopy Ladies member and now a member of Cream City Rug Hooking Guild in Wisconsin, shared her experience in visiting Guatemala and learning this technique from a coop of women recently empowered to use rug hooking as an profitable vocation.
We are a group with deep experience in a wide variety of textile arts, and we always welcome beginners. We can teach you how to hook and help you learn where to find materials and resources for this wonderful fine craft.
If you are interested in more individual learning, we even have an exceptional certified McGown instructor within our Guild, plus several knowledgeable textile teachers. Simple questions and techniques can be resolved at the meetings. More in-depth training may require hiring a teacher for a session or two.
Sue Minorini, a Loopy Ladies member, and a board member of McGown is making a suggestion to a member on the next colors to use on her rug. Selecting colors is called “color planning.”
We regularly host mini-workshops with nationally known instructors. And, we annually take some voluntary road trips to rug hooking events and workshops around the Midwest. (Depending on pandemics and other extenuating circumstances.)
Membership is about $65/year including the required national affiliation. After you have visited us for one meeting, if you are still interested, we will expect you to purchase a membership. For that, you will be invited to all meetings and events, get discounts to our workshops, will be a member of ATHA and receive the ATHA magazine five times a year.
